I get more nervous the longer Capitol waits. It’s a good, consistent album – better than I expected.
I hear traces of The Velvet Underground in the distortion and the drones. There is ‘80’s influence in her music, but it doesn’t dominate. I am surprised this is being released by Capitol between the content and the arty nude album cover. The vocals are deep lots of multi-tracking, but without the sinister pitch correction heard on too many pop albums. It’s a wall of noisy, guitar driven indie-pop that provides a counterpoint to Ferreira’s airy voice. The production on Sky Ferreira’s Night Time, My Time is anything but flat. Lorde’s album is just under 38 minutes in length, but seems longer than that as you listen. I think flat, minimalist production becomes fatiguing on the ears after X amount of songs. I don’t necessarily blame Lorde I blame the producer, Joel Little. However, by the time “White Teeth Teens” comes on I am looking to hear something else.
You forget that she was 16 years old while recording this album. The first few songs are amazing (“Tennis Court,” “Royals,” “Ribs,” “Team”). After seeing that, I was anxious to hear it though I expected to be shutting it off quickly. Rolling Stone magazine gave the album a bleak review – 2 ½ stars. Sky has gotten more attention for her recent drug bust than her music. Sky Ferreira also has an album coming out entitled Night Time, My Time. I was eagerly looking forward to Lorde’s Pure Heroine album. Lorde “Pure Heroine” & Sky Ferreira “Night Time, My Time” album coversĮxpectations are a funny thing.
